چکیده

ObjectiveTo determine if high alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) level in vaginal blood collected on a sanitary pad can assist with detecting an active miscarriage.DesignA prospective cohort study.SettingAcademic medical center.Patient(s)Five groups were evaluated: women miscarriage, pregnancy of unknown location, completed miscarriage or extrauterine (EUP), ongoing pregnancy, and undergoing elective dilation curettage (D&C).Intervention(s)None.Main Outcome Measure(s)For each patient, AFP the was quantified.Result(s)The median levels (and their ranges) 3.7 IU/mL (0.5–739.2) 4,542 (15.6–100,000) (n = 16) D&C 24) groups, respectively. Alpha-fetoprotein detected all cases except 1 case. In group 35), only 2 35 specimens showed detectable levels. location 12) EUP 10) no detected. Receiver operating characteristic analysis demonstrated 93.7% sensitivity 97.8% specificity for detection (cutoff 0.61 IU/mL; area under curve 0.96).Conclusion(s)Alpha-fetoprotein be extracted from pads. A same-day miscarriage. This novel test is useful differentiating miscarriages pregnancies, miscarriages, EUPs and, therefore, it reduces uncertainty, anxiety level, number repeat office visits. To study. Academic center. Five (D&C). None. For quantified. The 0.96).

First-trimester screening for neural tube defects using alpha-fetoprotein.

OBJECTIVE To assess the potential value of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) at 11-13 weeks' gestation in early screening for fetal neural tube defects (NTDs). METHODS Maternal serum AFP at 11-13 weeks' gestation was measured in 32 cases of fetal NTDs, including 18 cases of acrania and 14 cases of spina bifida, and 1,500 unaffected controls. The measured serum AFP was converted into mult...

First-trimester screening for trisomy 21 using alpha-fetoprotein.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the potential value of adding maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) to free β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) and PAPP-A and fetal nuchal translucency (NT) thickness in first-trimester screening for trisomy 21. METHODS In this case control study, serum AFP was measured in 100 trisomy 21 and 1,500 euploid pregnancies in which screening for trisomy 21 had been per...

Incorporation of dried blood alpha fetoprotein into traditional first trimester Down syndrome screening service

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine whether incorporation of dried blood alpha fetoprotein (AFP) into first trimester screening using the biochemical markers free Beta human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) can improve screening performance. METHODS A retrospective study of 34 Down syndrome and 1185 unaffected dried blood specimens. ...
